Somali President highlights historic Somalia–China ties, praises Beijing’s development model

Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has described the relationship between Somalia and China as historic, strong, and rooted in mutual respect and sustained cooperation since the two countries established diplomatic relations 65 years ago.

In an exclusive interview with CGTN this week, President Hassan Sheikh said China has been a consistent and reliable partner since Somalia’s early days of independence, noting that several Chinese-funded infrastructure projects continue to serve the Somali people.

“China has supported Somalia since the early years of our independence. Major projects such as hospitals, roads, and airports built with Chinese assistance are still in use today,” the president said. 

“The relationship between Somalia and China has never experienced ups and downs. It has been steady and continuous.”

The president praised China’s economic and technological progress, attributing much of its success to the leadership of President Xi Jinping, whom he said has guided China toward significant prosperity and development.

“China is an example from which many countries especially developing nations and African states can learn how to overcome challenges and achieve sustainable progress,” he said.

President Hassan Sheikh also highlighted China’s expanding engagement with Africa, describing it as a major opportunity for the continent and the wider international community. He pointed to cooperation in education, security, agriculture, technology, and the blue economy as areas with significant potential for shared growth.

On education, the president said Somalia places particular emphasis on strengthening public education and technical and vocational education and training (TVET), adding that China could play a critical role in technology transfer and skills development.

The president expressed gratitude to China for its continued support to Somalia, particularly in the areas of security, development, and the preservation of Somalia’s unity and sovereignty.

Somalia and China on Tuesday marked the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations, reaffirming their commitment to deepen cooperation and expand mutually beneficial partnerships.
